Odd and Even Signs in Vedic Astrology

Every one of the twelve signs in Vedic astrology gets classified as odd or even before anything else gets calculated about it, and most beginner material skips explaining why that split exists in the first place.

Oja and Yugma, Odd and Even

Counting from Aries as the first sign, the odd-numbered signs, Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius, are called Oja rashi. The even-numbered signs, Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces, are called Yugma rashi. Traditionally, odd signs carry a more assertive, outward-moving quality, and even signs carry a more receptive, inward-moving one, a classification layered on top of, not instead of, the more familiar element and modality of each sign.

This split shows up in several classical strength and placement calculations, generally used alongside a planet's own gender association, some planets are traditionally read as more at ease in odd signs, others in even ones, contributing to broader assessments of a planet's positional strength in a chart. It's a supporting factor rather than a standalone rule, one piece among several a full chart reading weighs together, not a shortcut that determines an outcome by itself.
