Vedic Astrology Basics

Vedic astrology — Jyotish — is a precise system refined over thousands of years in India. It offers deep insight into karma, dharma, timing, and spiritual growth.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (season-based). Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned with actual star positions. Because of precession, your Vedic sun sign may differ from your Western one — and that difference often reveals layers Western charts miss.

While Western pop astrology emphasizes the sun sign, Jyotish prioritizes:

  • Moon sign (Rashi) — mind and emotions
  • Nakshatra — finer lunar subdivision
  • Lagna — how you engage the world

Nakshatras are lunar mansions used for:

  • Personality and temperament
  • Compatibility (especially for marriage)
  • Muhurat — choosing auspicious moments
  • Spiritual and karmic themes

Vedic astrology uses dasha systems (notably Vimshottari) to map life periods ruled by specific planets. Combined with transits (gochara), this makes Jyotish especially strong for timing — when to act, when to wait.
