Panchang (Sanskrit: “five limbs”) is the Hindu almanac used to track cosmic rhythms. It is essential for muhurat — choosing auspicious timing for important actions.

Muhurat is an elected auspicious moment. Traditions consider:

  • Panchang elements (tithi, nakshatra, yoga)
  • Choghadiya — planetary time divisions through the day
  • Rahu Kaal and other inauspicious windows to avoid
  • Personal chart factors for major events (marriage, business launch)

Many practitioners check panchang each morning for:

  • Fasting days (ekadashi, pradosham)
  • Ideal times for puja and meditation
  • Travel and financial decisions
  • Starting new ventures

The day is divided into day and night choghadiya segments, each ruled by a planet:

  • Amrit, Shubh, Labh — generally favorable
  • Chal, Udveg, Rog, Kaal — use with caution or avoid for important work

See the Choghadiya periods reference for details.
