Mercury (Budha): Communication and Intellect

このコンテンツはまだ日本語訳がありません。

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, and in your chart, it’s the fastest-moving planet. It represents speed—of thought, of speech, of movement.

Mercury (called Budha in Sanskrit, which means “wisdom”) is about how you think, how you communicate, and how you move through the world gathering information and making connections.

While the Sun shows your essence and the Moon shows your feelings, Mercury shows your mind in action. It’s the intellect, the logic, the ability to process and share information.

Communication. How you speak, write, and express ideas. Your voice, literally and figuratively.

Intellect and reasoning. Your logical mind. How you analyze, solve problems, and think things through.

Siblings and peers. Mercury represents brothers, sisters, cousins, and people your age. Your relationship with them shapes how you think.

Learning and curiosity. Your drive to know things. How you learn. What fascinates you.

Commerce and trade. Buying, selling, negotiating, contracts. Business acumen.

Movement and travel. Short journeys, commuting, restlessness. Mercury loves to move.

Skillfulness. Dexterity, craft, the ability to work with your hands or mind to create something.

Adaptability. Mercury is the shapeshifter. It changes based on context. Flexible, adjustable, versatile.

Your Mercury sign shapes how your mind works and how you communicate.

Mercury in Aries (Mesha): Direct and quick. You speak first and think later. Impatient with slow conversations. Courageous communicator but can be blunt.

Mercury in Taurus (Vrishabha): Steady thinking. You speak deliberately, not quickly. Practical mind. Good with money and resources. Stubborn in your opinions.

Mercury in Gemini (Mithuna): Natural communicator. You think in multiple directions at once. Quick, witty, curious. Can be scattered or talk too much. This is Mercury’s home sign.

Mercury in Cancer (Karka): Emotional communication. You listen more than you speak. Good memory. Connections matter. Can be moody about ideas.

Mercury in Leo (Simha): Confident speaker. You have strong opinions and express them clearly. Love being heard. Can be dogmatic. Creative thinking.

Mercury in Virgo (Kanya): Analytical and detail-oriented. You notice everything. Excellent communicator about practical matters. Can be critical. This is Mercury’s exalted sign.

Mercury in Libra (Tula): Diplomatic communicator. You see both sides. Diplomatic, balanced. Skilled at negotiation. Can be indecisive. Good at writing and diplomacy.

Mercury in Scorpio (Vrischika): Penetrating mind. You see beneath the surface. Secretive communication style. Good at strategy and psychology. Can be suspicious or sarcastic.

Mercury in Sagittarius (Dhanu): Big-picture thinker. You see connections and meaning. Philosophical communication. Can ignore details. Optimistic.

Mercury in Capricorn (Makara): Serious thinker. You’re practical and responsible in communication. Slow to speak but what you say matters. Good with structure and systems.

Mercury in Aquarius (Kumbha): Innovative thinker. You think differently than others. Interested in ideas and technology. Can be detached from human emotion in communication.

Mercury in Pisces (Meena): Intuitive communication. You understand more than you can explain. Dreamy thinking. Good at art and music. Can be vague or confused in practical matters.

Where your Mercury sits shows which area of life requires your thinking and communication.

Mercury in House 11: Group communication and networking. Technology and innovation. Friends are intellectual.

Mercury in House 12: Inner, spiritual thinking. Writing privately. Psychology and intuition. Communication can be hidden.

When Mercury is exalted (in Virgo), your mind is at its sharpest. Clear thinking, excellent communication, skillfulness. You’re organized and precise.

When Mercury is debilitated (in Pisces), your thinking is fuzzy and intuitive. Words don’t easily match your inner knowing. You’re learning to trust intuition over logic.

When Mercury is in its own sign (Gemini), it’s at home. Natural communicator and multitasker.

A strong Mercury means you think clearly, communicate well, learn easily, and adapt to change.

A weak Mercury can mean confusion, poor communication, learning difficulties, or scattered thinking.

Mercury goes retrograde (appears to move backward) about three times a year, for roughly three weeks each time. Many people notice communication becoming unclear during these periods—misunderstandings, technology glitches, delayed messages.

In your birth chart, if Mercury was retrograde when you were born, you may have an internal communication style. Your thinking is deeper but more private. You understand more than you can easily express.

Mercury doesn’t measure intelligence (that’s more complex in a full chart). It measures communication ability and mental agility.

Someone with a “weak” Mercury can be brilliant; they just might struggle to express it easily. Someone with a “strong” Mercury might be a great communicator but not necessarily deeply wise.

Communicate clearly. Be intentional about how you express yourself.

Learn continuously. Mercury loves growth through knowledge. Feed your curiosity.

Consider both sides. Mercury’s job is to see connections. Practice balanced thinking.

Repair sibling relationships. Mercury relates to siblings. Healing those connections matters for your thinking.

Move your body. Mercury is about movement. Walking, dancing, stretching helps clear your mind.
