Pythagorean Numerology: The Western System
Pythagorean numerology is named after the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras, though the system has been refined over centuries. It’s the most popular numerology system in the West because it’s straightforward and easy to learn.
The foundation is simple: each letter of the alphabet corresponds to a number from 1 to 9. Using this system, you can convert any name or word into numbers, then interpret the meanings.
The Pythagorean Number-Letter System
Section titled “The Pythagorean Number-Letter System”Here’s the basic mapping:
| A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
| J | K | L | M | N | O | P | Q | R |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
| S | T | U | V | W | X | Y | Z |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
Notice the pattern repeats: after I (9), J starts back at 1. After R (9), S starts at 1. After Z, the pattern would repeat again.
How to Calculate
Section titled “How to Calculate”Let’s use an example: the name SARAH
S = 1 A = 1 R = 9 A = 1 H = 8
Total: 1 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 8 = 20 Reduce: 2 + 0 = 2
SARAH’s Expression Number is 2.
It’s that simple. Every letter has a number. Add them all up. Reduce to a single digit (or master number 11, 22, 33).
The Four Core Numbers in Pythagorean System
Section titled “The Four Core Numbers in Pythagorean System”1. Life Path Number
Section titled “1. Life Path Number”What it is: Your overall life direction and purpose. The path your life wants to take.
How to calculate: Add your birth date (month + day + year) and reduce.
Example: Born March 15, 1990 March = 3 Day = 15 → 1 + 5 = 6 Year = 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
Life Path = 3 + 6 + 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
2. Expression Number (Destiny Number)
Section titled “2. Expression Number (Destiny Number)”What it is: Your natural talents, abilities, and how you express yourself. What the universe gave you to work with.
How to calculate: Add all the letters in your full birth name and reduce.
Example: SARAH MARIE JOHNSON S(1) + A(1) + R(9) + A(1) + H(8) + M(4) + A(1) + R(9) + I(9) + E(5) + J(1) + O(6) + H(8) + N(5) + S(1) + O(6) + N(5) = 80 → 8 + 0 = 8
Expression Number = 8
3. Soul Urge Number (Heart’s Desire)
Section titled “3. Soul Urge Number (Heart’s Desire)”What it is: Your innermost motivations. What your soul truly wants. Your deepest needs.
How to calculate: Add only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) in your full birth name and reduce.
Example: SARAH MARIE JOHNSON Vowels: A(1) + A(1) + A(1) + I(9) + E(5) + O(6) + O(6) = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11
Soul Urge Number = 11 (a master number!)
4. Personality Number
Section titled “4. Personality Number”What it is: How others perceive you. Your outward presentation and first impression.
How to calculate: Add only the consonants in your full birth name and reduce.
Example: SARAH MARIE JOHNSON Consonants: S(1) + R(9) + H(8) + M(4) + R(9) + J(1) + H(8) + N(5) + S(1) + N(5) = 51 → 5 + 1 = 6
Personality Number = 6
Putting It Together
Section titled “Putting It Together”Let’s look at our example person: Sarah Marie Johnson, born March 15, 1990

Pythagorean Strengths
Section titled “Pythagorean Strengths”Simple: The letter-to-number system is straightforward. No complex formulas.
Intuitive: The meanings of 1-9 are clear and intuitive. Easy to remember.
Popular: Because it’s so popular, there’s lots of material available to deepen your understanding.
Flexible: Works easily with any language that uses the Latin alphabet (English, Spanish, German, French, etc.).
The One Limitation
Section titled “The One Limitation”Pythagorean numerology treats all numbers the same way—it reduces 29 to 11 (master number), but it also reduces 38 to 11. Some practitioners argue that 29 and 38 carry different vibrations even though they both reduce to 11.
Chaldean numerology addresses this by having a different calculation system. But for most purposes, Pythagorean is sufficient.
