Vedic Numerology (Anka Shastra)
Vedic numerology, known as Anka Shastra, is the number science of ancient India. It’s deeply connected to Vedic astrology (Jyotish) and represents the oldest numerological system still in practice.
If you’re drawn to Indian philosophy or already study Vedic astrology, Vedic numerology is the natural companion.
The Foundation: Numbers 1-9
Section titled “The Foundation: Numbers 1-9”Like all numerology systems, Vedic numerology works with numbers 1-9, each with specific meanings and energies.
1 — Sun energy. Leadership, independence, new beginnings. The initiator.
2 — Moon energy. Emotions, intuition, balance, partnerships. The nurturer.
3 — Jupiter energy. Expansion, wisdom, fortune, creativity. The teacher.
4 — Rahu energy. Obstacles, learning, grounding, discipline. The challenger.
5 — Mercury energy. Communication, intellect, versatility, change. The messenger.
6 — Venus energy. Love, beauty, harmony, relationships. The artist.
7 — Ketu energy. Spirituality, mystery, introspection, completion. The mystic.
8 — Saturn energy. Power, ambition, karma, material success. The achiever.
9 — Mars energy. Compassion, completion, humanitarianism. The humanitarian.
Notice the connection to the nine planets (Grahas) in Vedic astrology. Each number corresponds to a planet. This is why Vedic numerology integrates so naturally with Vedic astrology.
Connection to Vedic Astrology
Section titled “Connection to Vedic Astrology”In Vedic numerology, your numbers don’t stand alone. They relate directly to planetary energies.
If your Life Path is 1, your ruling planet is the Sun. You have similar qualities: leadership, courage, clarity.
If your Life Path is 7, your ruling planet is Ketu. You’re drawn to spirituality and mystery.
This integration is unique to Vedic numerology. It means your numbers and your birth chart (astrological) speak the same language.
The Vedic Calculation System

Unlike Chaldean, it cycles 1-9, not 1-8. It cycles forever: after Z comes A again.
The Core Numbers
Section titled “The Core Numbers”Vedic numerology also focuses on core numbers, but emphasizes different ones than Western systems.
Life Path Number: Your overall life journey and soul’s purpose. Calculate from birth date.
Destiny Number: What you’re meant to accomplish and express. Calculate from full name.
Psychic Number: Your inner nature and natural talents. Calculate from birth day (not the full date).
Attitude Number: Your approach to challenges and opportunities. Calculate from birth month.
The Psychic Number is unique to Vedic numerology and often considered more important than Western systems place on single-digit birth day numbers.
A Vedic Example

Life Path: 9 + 22 + 1985 = 9 + 4 + 5 = 18 → 1 + 8 = 9 (Mars energy, humanitarian)
Destiny: R(9) + A(1) + D(4) + H(8) + A(1) = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5 (Mercury energy, communicative)
Psychic Number: 22 → 2 + 2 = 4 (Rahu energy, learning through challenge)
Attitude Number: 9 (Mars, courageous approach)
Together: Radha’s life is about humanitarian service (9), expressed through communication and adaptability (5), while learning and growing through challenges (4), with a courageous approach to life (9).
She might be a teacher, social worker, or activist—roles combining compassion (9) with communication (5).
The Vedic Year
Section titled “The Vedic Year”Another unique Vedic numerology concept is the Personal Year Number. Each year has its own energy that affects your personal cycles.
Calculate: Month + Day + (Current Year reduced to single digit)
This shows what energy is active in your current year. Some years are for action (years with 1 or 8 energy). Other years are for rest and completion (9 energy).
Knowing your Personal Year helps you navigate timing and understand why certain years feel challenging or fortunate.
