Aspects: How Planets Interact
Planets don’t exist in isolation in your chart. They interact with each other at different angles. These interactions are called aspects.
An aspect is the angle between two planets. Some angles create harmony. Others create tension. The tension often leads to growth.
Major Aspects
Section titled “Major Aspects”Conjunction (0°): Planets are together. Combined energy. Can be harmonious or challenging depending on the planets.
Trine (120°): Planets are in compatible signs. Harmonious, easy flow. Natural talent or luck.
Sextile (60°): Planets are in compatible signs, less intense than trine. Supportive and helpful.
Square (90°): Planets are in conflicting signs. Tension. Creates friction but also drives growth and action.
Opposition (180°): Planets are directly across from each other. Polarizing. Requires balance and integration.
Harmonious Aspects
Section titled “Harmonious Aspects”Trine and Sextile are considered harmonious.
Sun trine Moon: Your conscious will and emotional needs align easily. You feel self-aware and balanced.
Venus sextile Mars: Love and action flow naturally together. You’re good at pursuing what and who you want.
Jupiter trine Saturn: Luck and responsibility balance naturally. You build lasting success.
Harmonious aspects don’t mean easy or lazy. They mean the energy flows naturally. You have to develop it, but it comes naturally.
Challenging Aspects
Section titled “Challenging Aspects”Square and Opposition are considered challenging.
Sun square Saturn: Your identity and authority clash. You struggle with self-confidence but grow through the struggle.
Venus square Mars: Love and desire conflict. Relationships require conscious effort, but potential for deep passion.
Moon opposite Venus: Emotions and values clash. Your emotional needs don’t match what you think you should want.
Challenging aspects create tension. But tension creates growth. Many successful people have challenging aspects.
A square between Mars and Saturn means hard work doesn’t come naturally, but you become disciplined through effort.
Conjunctions
Section titled “Conjunctions”Conjunctions are tricky. The two planets’ energies combine.
Sun conjunct Mercury: You’re very mental and communicate your identity. Natural speaker or writer.
Venus conjunct Mars: Love and desire are strongly connected. Passionate relationships.
Mercury conjunct Saturn: Clear, serious thinking. You speak carefully and thoughtfully.
A conjunction can be harmonious or challenging depending on the planets involved and what they represent.
Aspect Orbs
Section titled “Aspect Orbs”Aspects don’t have to be exact to count. There’s a range called an orb where an aspect still applies.
If your Sun is at 5° Leo and your Venus is at 24° Leo, they’re 19° apart. That’s too wide for a conjunction (usually 8-10° orb).
But if your Sun is at 10° Leo and your Venus is at 2° Libra, they’re roughly 90° apart (within orb for a square).
Close aspects have stronger influence than wide ones.
Minor Aspects
Section titled “Minor Aspects”Beyond the major five, there are minor aspects:
Quincunx (150°): Slight tension. Requires adjustment. Semi-square (45°): Minor irritation. Sesquiquadrate (135°): Minor friction.
Most astrologers focus on the major aspects, but minor aspects add nuance.
Applying vs. Separating
Section titled “Applying vs. Separating”An aspect is applying if the planets are moving toward exactness. An aspect is separating if the planets have just passed exactness.
Applying aspects feel more active and demanding. Separating aspects feel like they’re releasing.
Using Aspects
Section titled “Using Aspects”Look at your chart and notice:
- Which planets have harmonious aspects? (Easy flow, natural talent)
- Which planets have challenging aspects? (Tension, growth potential)
- Are difficult planets well-aspected? (Make the best of challenging energy)
A challenging chart with many squares can create an ambitious, driven person. An easy chart with many trines can create someone who attracts luck but may lack drive.
Balance is ideal—some ease, some challenge.
