Major Arcana Overview
The Major Arcana is the heart of the Tarot deck. 22 cards that represent the soul’s journey of transformation—from the innocence of The Fool to the wholeness of The World.
Each card is an archetype—a universal character, situation, or lesson that resonates across all cultures and times.
The Fool’s Journey
Section titled “The Fool’s Journey”The Major Arcana tells one complete story: The Fool’s Journey. It’s a metaphor for spiritual development and self-knowledge.
The Fool (0) begins the journey with innocence and trust, and through encounters with various archetypal figures and situations, the soul matures, learns, faces trials, transforms, and eventually reaches enlightenment as The World (21).

1 - The Magician: Will, manifestation, power, intention, action
2 - The High Priestess: Intuition, hidden knowledge, the unconscious, secrets

5 - The Hierophant: Spiritual authority, tradition, teaching, belief systems
6 - The Lovers: Choice, love, connection, values, relationships

8 - Strength: Inner strength, courage, patience, control over instinct
9 - The Hermit: Introspection, wisdom, solitude, seeking truth, enlightenment
10 - Wheel of Fortune: Cycles, fate, destiny, luck, the inevitable
11 - Justice: Justice, karma, truth, accountability, legal matters
12 - The Hanged Man: Suspension, pause, letting go, perspective shift, sacrifice
13 - Death: Transformation, endings and beginnings, change, rebirth
14 - Temperance: Balance, moderation, patience, integration, healing
15 - The Devil: Shadow, bondage, illusion, temptation, materialism
16 - The Tower: Sudden change, upheaval, destruction, revelation, breakthrough
17 - The Star: Hope, inspiration, guidance, clarity, purpose, dreams
18 - The Moon: Illusion, intuition, dreams, unconscious, the hidden
19 - The Sun: Success, joy, clarity, enlightenment, vitality, truth
20 - Judgement: Calling, awakening, reckoning, resurrection, transformation
21 - The World: Completion, fulfillment, wholeness, achievement, travel
The Journey’s Significance

- Cards 0-10: The soul learns the basic lessons of existence (will, knowledge, love, strength, fate)
- Cards 11-20: The soul faces challenges and transformations (justice, sacrifice, death, illusion, upheaval, resurrection)
- Card 21: The soul achieves wholeness and completion
This journey repeats at different levels throughout our lives. Every major life transition is a micro Fool’s Journey.
Major Arcana in Readings
Section titled “Major Arcana in Readings”When Major Arcana cards appear in a reading, pay special attention. They indicate:
- Significant life events or lessons
- Soul-level insights
- Major transformation or turning points
- Archetypal energies at play
Many Major Arcana cards in a reading suggest this situation is important to your soul’s growth.
The Archetypal Power
Section titled “The Archetypal Power”The reason Tarot has endured for centuries is that these 22 cards capture universal human experiences and archetypes. The Fool, The Lovers, Death (transformation), The Tower (sudden change), The World (completion)—these are experiences every human goes through.
When you draw these cards, you’re accessing deep wisdom about what you’re experiencing.
Working with Major Arcana
Section titled “Working with Major Arcana”Meditate on individual cards. Each card is infinitely deep. Pick one and spend time with it.
Follow The Fool’s Journey. Lay out all 22 cards in order and read the story they tell together.
Notice which cards appear for you repeatedly. These indicate areas of active soul growth.
In readings, treat Major Arcana seriously. They indicate major themes and lessons.
