Tarot Spreads: Reading Techniques

A spread is the pattern in which you lay cards for a reading. Different spreads serve different purposes.

When to use: Daily guidance, quick answer, simple question

Layout: Just one card

How to read: This card is your answer. Meditate on its meaning.

Example: “What do I need to know today?”

Result: The Star (hope and guidance). You need hope and trust today.

When to use: Quick reading, three-part answer, past-present-future

Layout: Three cards in a row

Common meanings:

  • Past-Present-Future
  • Situation-Action-Outcome
  • What to Keep-What to Release-What to Embrace
  • Mind-Body-Spirit
  • Self-Other-Relationship

How to read: Each position tells one part of the story.

Example: “What should I know about this job offer?”

  • Position 1 (Situation): Nine of Pentacles (abundance, mastery, success)
  • Position 2 (Action): Two of Cups (partnership, collaboration, openness)
  • Position 3 (Outcome): The Sun (success, happiness, clarity)

Reading: The job offers success and mastery. Success comes through collaboration and openness. The outcome is happiness and clarity.

When to use: Comprehensive reading, complex situation, deep exploration

Layout: 10 cards in a cross pattern

Positions:

  1. Present situation
  2. Challenge or crossroads
  3. Unconscious influences
  4. Distant past
  5. Possible outcome
  6. Near future
  7. Your attitude
  8. Other people’s attitudes
  9. Hopes and fears
  10. Final outcome

How to read: Read each position, then synthesize the whole picture.

This is a professional-level spread. Use when you want deep, comprehensive understanding.

Five-Card Spread: Problem-Cause-Solution-Outcome-Lesson

Relationship Spread: You-Your Partner-The Relationship-Challenges-Strengths

Yes/No Spread: Single card for a yes/no question (upright=yes, reversed=no)

Chakra Spread: Seven cards for your seven chakras (Root-Sacral-Solar Plexus-Heart-Throat-Third Eye-Crown)

Career Spread: Current position-Strengths-Growth area-Next opportunity-Outcome

You don’t need pre-made spreads. Create your own:

  1. Define your question: Be specific about what you want to know
  2. Create positions: Decide how many cards and what each position means
  3. Lay out the cards: Shuffle and place in your pattern
  4. Interpret: Read each position and synthesize the whole

Example: Want to understand a friendship?

  • Card 1: What I love about this friend
  • Card 2: What challenges us
  • Card 3: What we’re both learning
  • Card 4: Where the friendship is heading

Shuffle intentionally: While shuffling, focus on your question

Lay cards with intention: Place each card consciously in its position

Don’t overinterpret: Sometimes a simple three-card reading is enough

Trust the spread: The cards you get are the ones you need

Write it down: Record your readings to see patterns over time

Revisit readings: Come back to a reading weeks or months later. New insights emerge

A spread gives structure to your intuition. Rather than randomly flipping through cards, a spread channels your inquiry into specific positions.

This structure actually enhances intuition—it focuses it.

The best spreads are the ones that feel right to you. Experiment until you find your favorite layouts.
