Ethics in Tarot Reading
Tarot is a powerful tool. Reading responsibly and ethically ensures you help people without harming them.
Core Ethics Principles
Section titled “Core Ethics Principles”Consent
Section titled “Consent”Always get permission before reading.
Don’t read for someone without their knowledge or consent. Even “just a quick card” violates this if they didn’t agree.
If someone seems hesitant, respect that. Not everyone wants a reading, and that’s okay.
Empowerment, Not Dependency
Section titled “Empowerment, Not Dependency”Help people trust themselves, not depend on Tarot.
Your goal is to empower people to make their own choices, not to tell them what to do.
Bad: “The cards say you should break up with your partner.” Good: “These cards suggest conflict in the relationship. What do you think is happening?”
Free Will Always
Section titled “Free Will Always”Emphasize that people have free will.
Never read as absolute prediction. The future is fluid and changeable.
The cards show likely outcomes if nothing changes. But people can always change.
Bad: “You’re definitely getting pregnant next year.” Good: “These cards suggest fertility and growth coming. That might mean pregnancy, or other types of expansion. What are you hoping for?”
Confidentiality
Section titled “Confidentiality”Keep readings private.
Don’t share details from someone’s reading without permission. It’s their sacred information.
This includes social media posting about readings (even anonymously) without clear permission.
No “Bad News” Panic
Section titled “No “Bad News” Panic”Frame difficult cards as invitations to growth, not predictions of doom.
Difficult cards (The Tower, Death, The Devil) aren’t curses. They’re invitations to transform or be aware.
Bad: “Death! Someone’s dying!” Good: “This card suggests a major ending or transformation. Something significant is shifting.”
Know Your Limits
Section titled “Know Your Limits”Don’t read for serious mental health, medical, or legal issues.
If someone is suicidal, tell them to contact a crisis line, not consult Tarot.
If they’re dealing with serious mental illness, suggest therapy.
Never tell someone not to take prescribed medication because “the cards say so.”
For legal issues, suggest they consult an attorney.
Tarot is guidance, not a replacement for professional help.
Don’t Charge if You’re Just Learning
Section titled “Don’t Charge if You’re Just Learning”Only charge for readings once you’re confident in your skill.
If you’re still learning, offer free or low-cost readings to practice.
This respects the people you’re reading for. They shouldn’t pay for your learning curve.
Respect Different Beliefs
Section titled “Respect Different Beliefs”Not everyone believes in Tarot. That’s okay.
Don’t push readings on skeptics. Don’t insist your reading is “true” if someone disagrees.
Tarot works through belief and openness. Forcing it on someone closed to it doesn’t work.
Your Own Ethics Code
Section titled “Your Own Ethics Code”Beyond these principles, develop your own. Ask yourself:
- Am I reading from my highest self or my ego?
- Am I truly helping or feeding my need to be seen as wise?
- Am I respecting this person’s autonomy?
- Would I want someone reading for me this way?
- Am I making claims I can’t back up?
Red Flags in Tarot Reading
Section titled “Red Flags in Tarot Reading”Avoid reading readers who:
- Predict dire futures without option for change
- Insist you need “removal spells” (often a sales tactic)
- Charge exorbitant amounts
- Read without consent
- Claim to be 100% accurate
- Make you feel dependent on them
- Read for serious medical/mental health issues
Reading Yourself
Section titled “Reading Yourself”Special ethics for self-reading:
You have bias about your own situation. Notice this.
You might read what you want to hear, not what the cards say.
Consider getting a neutral reader occasionally for perspective.
Be honest with yourself when reading your own cards.
Teaching Others
Section titled “Teaching Others”If you teach Tarot, emphasize ethics.
Pass on these principles to students. The Tarot community is stronger when readers are ethical.
Teach people to empower others, not to use Tarot for control or manipulation.
The Deepest Ethics Principle
Section titled “The Deepest Ethics Principle”Read from love.
If you’re reading from a place of genuine care for the person’s growth and well-being, most ethical questions resolve themselves.
Tarot read from love is healing. Tarot read from ego or greed is harmful.
Lead with love.
