Vastu for Different Rooms
Different rooms have different purposes, so Vastu principles apply differently. Here’s guidance for each room in your home.
Master Bedroom
Section titled “Master Bedroom”Ideal location: Southwest corner of the home
Ideal bed position: Head toward South, feet toward North
Elements: Earth (grounding, stable)
Colors: Warm earth tones (brown, terracotta, beige)
What to include:
- Solid, grounding bed
- Minimal electronics
- Soft, warm lighting
- Calming decor
- Plants (especially in corners)
What to avoid:
- Mirrors facing the bed
- Heavy clutter
- Stimulating colors (bright red, orange)
- Windows directly above the bed
- TV or computer in bedroom
Why: The Southwest is heavy, stable, and grounding—perfect for rest. South-facing head promotes deep sleep.
Living Room / Family Room
Section titled “Living Room / Family Room”Ideal location: Center, East, or North of the home
Seating: Face East or North if possible
Elements: Balanced—mix of all elements
Colors: Light, cheerful colors with warm accents
What to include:
- Comfortable seating arranged to encourage conversation
- Good natural light (especially East-facing)
- Plants for life energy
- Water element (North) or fire (Southeast) if present
- Artwork that inspires
- Clear pathways for flow
What to avoid:
- Dark corners
- Blocked windows
- Heavy clutter
- Pointed furniture edges facing people
- Chaotic arrangement
Why: Living room is family/social space. East and North promote vitality and prosperity.
Kitchen
Section titled “Kitchen”Ideal location: Southeast corner (Fire element)
Stove orientation: Cook facing East (most auspicious) or North
Elements: Fire primarily, with good Water element drainage
Colors: Warm colors (red, orange, yellow) with white accents
What to include:
- Good ventilation and natural light
- Bright lighting
- Clean, organized counters
- Organized storage (nothing hanging chaotically)
- Open shelving shows abundance
- Fresh, healthy ingredients
What to avoid:
- Kitchen directly below or above bedroom
- Clutter and mess
- Stove directly in front of main door
- Poor ventilation
- Stale or expired food
- Knives displayed prominently (pointing outward)
Why: Southeast is fire/cooking element. A clean, well-lit kitchen attracts prosperity and good health.
Bathroom
Section titled “Bathroom”Ideal location: Northwest, West, or South (away from Northeast and East)
Water drainage: Away from center and important areas
Elements: Water with good drainage
Colors: Light, clean colors (white, light blue, cream)
What to include:
- Excellent ventilation
- Good lighting
- Clean, well-maintained fixtures
- Plants if humidity tolerates
- Mirror in good condition
What to avoid:
- Leaky fixtures (wastes wealth)
- Dark, damp bathrooms
- Mirrors facing main door
- Bathroom in Northeast (contaminates spirituality)
- Clutter and dirt
Why: Water must drain properly. Poor bathrooms in wrong locations waste prosperity.
Home Office / Workspace
Section titled “Home Office / Workspace”Ideal location: East, North, or Northeast corner
Desk orientation: Face East (vitality) or North (prosperity)
Elements: Air and Fire for alertness and energy
Colors: Light colors with warm accents (yellow, soft green, white)
What to include:
- Good natural light (East-facing if possible)
- Organized, clutter-free desk
- Inspiring artwork or vision board
- Plants for growth
- Clear pathways around desk
- Comfortable, supportive chair
What to avoid:
- Back to window or door (exposed, unfocused)
- Dark, dim corners
- Clutter and stacks of paper
- Broken or dark walls behind desk
- Chaotic or stressful imagery
Why: East and North promote alertness and prosperity. Organized space promotes focus and success.
Meditation / Prayer Room
Section titled “Meditation / Prayer Room”Ideal location: Northeast corner (most spiritual)
Orientation: Face East or North if meditating/praying
Elements: Air, Space, and subtle Earth (grounding)
Colors: Light, pure colors (white, light blue, cream, soft yellow)
What to include:
- Clean, bright, airy space
- Minimal decoration (simple altar if desired)
- Comfortable cushion or bench
- Plants for air purification
- Soft, natural lighting
- Silence and quietness
What to avoid:
- Clutter
- Dark corners
- Distracting imagery
- Artificial, harsh lighting
- TV, phone, or stimulation
- Heavy furniture
Why: Northeast is the most spiritually auspicious. Clean, light, simple spaces support spiritual practice.
Dining Room
Section titled “Dining Room”Ideal location: East, Southeast, or South
Dining table: Center of the room, East or North facing
Elements: Fire (healthy digestion), Light, warmth
Colors: Warm, appetite-stimulating colors (warm orange, soft red, cream)
What to include:
- Natural light
- Warm lighting (candles acceptable)
- Plants (not hanging over table)
- Art that inspires good appetite
- Clean, organized space
- Comfortable seating
What to avoid:
- Darkness
- Clutter near food
- Dead plants
- Mirrors reflecting food (confuses stomach)
- Toilets visible from dining area
- Heavy or sad imagery
Why: Warm fire element and light support healthy digestion and family bonding.
Guest Bedroom
Section titled “Guest Bedroom”Ideal location: West, Northwest, or other non-master-bedroom locations
Bed position: Similar to master (head South if possible)
Elements: Earth mixed with Air for comfort and freshness
Colors: Light, welcoming colors
What to include:
- Comfortable bed
- Clean, fresh linens
- Good air circulation
- Light, welcoming feel
- Simple decor
- Space to unpack
What to avoid:
- Old, uncomfortable furniture
- Heavy clutter
- Stale air
- Dark corners
- Unpleasant odors
Why: Guest rooms should feel welcoming and comfortable. West and Northwest allow guests to rest without affecting main home energy.
Entryway / Main Door
Section titled “Entryway / Main Door”Ideal direction: North or East facing (prosperity and vitality)
Elements: Air (fresh, flowing)
Colors: Welcoming, bright colors
What to include:
- Clear, unobstructed entrance
- Bright lighting (inside and outside)
- Welcoming decor
- Plants or flowers (alive, vibrant)
- Clean, well-maintained door
- Good air circulation
What to avoid:
- Clutter blocking entry
- Dark, dim entrance
- Broken door or hinges
- Dead plants
- Stale air
- Shoes piled everywhere
Why: Your entrance is how prosperity and opportunities enter. A clear, bright, welcoming entrance attracts good energy and abundance.
